Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about kommu.
What is kommu?
kommu is your trust-based home sharing and travel network. You trust who you know and through whom you know. Share your vacant home or room with the people you trust on your terms, with no fees.
How do I join?
Download the kommu iOS app with your name and location (no address necessary).

Easily connect with friends and friends-of-friends by linking your contacts or inviting them using your unique profile share link.
How is this different than short-term rental sites like Airbnb or VRBO?
Although kommu allows users to leverage their homes with the people they trust, it is not a rental business. Instead, kommu operates as a network that reveals all available stays through your trusted contacts. It's important to note that any bookings and engagements are strictly between the parties involved.

kommu helps you connect with your network while traveling by discovering the locations and travel plans of your connections. It's like a city-level "Find my Friends" for bigger trips, connecting you with your network to make travel more engaging.
How do I make payments on kommu?
All transactions, if any, are handled directly between you and your friend.
Am I always exchanging money with users?
No! You have the freedom to list your place on your own terms to your trusted connections. You can choose to gift your place to close friends for just a cleaning fee, charge cost, swap with others, or even pay for a trusted house or pet-sitter. The choice is yours.
What if something breaks?
After booking a stay, guests have the option to purchase a damage insurance policy for a little extra comfort.

In the event of any disputes among friends, we kindly ask that you attempt to resolve the matter with each other. Please keep in mind that you assume the same level of risk when you allow a friend to stay at your place as you do when you stay at theirs.
Why am I checking my contacts?
To help you connect with the people you trust, kommu checks your phone contacts for any existing kommu users.

kommu does not store your contact information! This step is only used to identify other kommu users by phone number within your personal network.
Do I need to list my place?
Nope, listing your place on kommu is totally up to you. But if you do want to share it with your friends, you can do so on your own terms. And if you're curious about your friend's available places or when you'll be in the same location, you can just use kommu to find out. It's that simple.
Why should I list my trips?
Listing your trips on kommu is optional, but it's a great way to let your friends know that you'll be traveling and make it easier to connect with them in real life. It's also a convenient way to see if your friends will be in the same place at the same time.
What if I don’t want to let others know that I’m not home?
You can keep your travels private on kommu and your address is only shared with guests after a booking is confirmed. Your friends will only know that you're in a certain city or traveling. To avoid any security concerns, you can say you have a guest staying at your place while you're away.
